Colorado Beer Week could pick no better location to enjoy a vertical tasting of Alaskan Smoked Porter than Falling Rock Tap House. Having been in business for over 10 years and having a relationship directly with the brewers and breweries themselves; they know what they are doing when it comes to beer.
Falling Rock Tap House has in the ballpark of 60 taps. If you love draft beer this is where you go. Don’t expect to find the usual when perusing their beer list, they are known for carrying amazing craft beer as well as very hard to find and highly allocated beer from around the world. If that’s not all you can always find bottled beer to your liking. They have a very impressive (almost as impressive as their draft list) off the list- list. Here you’ll find vintage beers and rare oddities such as Bitches Brew by Dogfish Head, ’05 Samael by Avery, and verticals of Thomas Hardy barley wine. It’s not wonder that Colorado Beer Week picked Falling Rock for a night of vintage beer.
Alaskan Brewing Co. has been around since 1986, founded by Marcy and Geoff Larson. While producing some great beer over the years the one that has always hit home for just about everyone is the Alaskan Smoked Porter. While Rauchbier was popular in Germany and Dopplebocks usually had some smokey qualities, nothing really stood out as smoky in the U.S. in the late 80′s to early 90′s. Enter Alaskan Brewing Co. and their Smoked Porter.
Alaskan’s Smoked Porter is quite a robust beer with chicory flavored smoke, great carbonation, and has a very earthy quality to it. This is one of those great beers that can be aged over time. As it ages, the smoke becomes more of a subtle background note. Around the third and fourth years the beer’s other flavors such as sherry, currant, raisin, and toffee-like nuances come forward. The fifth year sees the reemergence of the smoky character to the forefront. Pretty cool stuff yea?
Alaskan Brewing Co. has won numerous gold medals at the Great American Beer Fest (GABF) and Scott Kerkmans (founder and beer visionary for Colorado Beer Week) worked as a brewer for Alaskan in 2005 when they took home the gold for their Smoked Porter. This is truly an award winning beer and tasting a vertical will be a step into heaven.
